The EQUAL4EUROPE Team organized an online professional development workshop at the Academy of Management Conference 2021 on Monday, the 2nd of August.
During a panel discussion, Dr Janka Kottulová, Professor Hanneke Takkenberg, Professor Anna Gines, and Dr Joana Vassilopoulou kindly agreed to talk about gender equality in higher education institutions. The panelists focused on how to research and teach gender inequalities issues in academia, how can gender equity can be facilitated through internal networking in higher education institutions, the importance of measuring gender equality and the challenges of collecting data, and possible solutions and measures fostering gender equality in academia.
30 participants discussed in 3 breakout rooms these different topics and concluded:
- To overcome some challenges GDI topics can be wrapped up in different topics e.g., psychological wellbeing, social safety.
- Several participants experienced various difficulties in collecting data, but unavailable data can also tell a story.
- It was highlighted to understand GDI challenges that measuring should not only be a counting heads activity.
- To overcome resistance GDI policies could address both genders. For example, in Spain men and women have the same number of days for parental leave. They each can either use them or lose them. This example is also related to stigma and we discussed how to can we eliminate stigma of caring responsibilities which are mainly influencing women.
The panelists:
Dr Janka Kottulova, Comenius University
Dr Joana Vassilopoulou, Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University
Prof Hanneke Takkenberg, Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University
Dr Anna Ginès i Fabrellas, ESADE
